Thirty educators will be honored Monday for developing teaching curriculum on the theme “The World Around Us.”
The topic was chosen by members of the Newport-Mesa Schools Foundation with the goal of educating students about the environment, said Phyllis Riley, a foundation spokeswoman.
“We invited environmental agencies to show us some guidelines,” Riley said.
Teachers across the district submitted proposals for grants to support their projects. At Newport Elementary, for instance, third-grade teacher Joelle Kaiser suggested demonstrating the life cycle of trout by hatching trout eggs.
Paularino Elementary second-grade teacher Karen Ingalls proposed teaching students about primates by studying references to them in literature, then seeing them up close during a field trip to the San Diego Zoo.
At Killybrooke Elementary, sixth-grade teacher Barbara Toohey suggested introducing students to early civilizations through video documentaries on ancient peoples and how their cultures shaped the modern world.
