Parents Polled on Fundamental Schools

Share

Surveys soliciting parents’ opinions on fundamental schools were distributed Friday at local schools and the district headquarters.

The 12-question survey seeks to determine the qualities parents want in a fundamental school and whether the district should add more fundamental schools.

Earlier this year, Santa Ana Unified School District board members debated increasing the number of fundamental schools from the current three, but decided to solicit public opinion on them first.

Fundamental schools emphasize parental involvement, dress codes and patriotism, but many other district schools have similar policies.

Still, fundamental schools have long waiting lists. The district’s fundamental schools are Greenville and Muir elementaries and MacArthur intermediate.

Two trustees, Audrey Yamagata-Noji and Robert W. Balen, opposed the surveys, saying they were poorly worded and did not establish any criteria for when fundamental schools should be added.

The voluntary surveys can be completed by any Santa Ana resident with a school-age child, regardless of where the child attends school.

They must be returned by May 3 to a school or to district headquarters at 1601 E. Chestnut Ave., Santa Ana.
