Novice Gryder Rides Honour And Glory

Aaron Gryder, who has ridden only once before in the Kentucky Derby, was named Thursday by trainer Wayne Lukas to ride Honour And Glory in Saturday’s race.

Gryder, 25, who finished 14th aboard Mi Cielo in 1993, was the leading jockey in the spring at Churchill Downs in 1990, when he won 52 races.

Gryder got the Honour And Glory assignment after Lukas had exhausted other options, including Donna Barton--ruled out by owner Michael Tabor, who dislikes using female jockeys--and Laffit Pincay, who had committed to Hollywood Park.

Ernie Paragallo, owner of Unbridled’s Song, said that he isn’t disappointed that his colt drew the outside post position in Saturday’s 20-horse field.

“I’ve got the best horse, so it’s fair that they’d give me the worst post,” Paragallo said. “They might ask my horse to carry 10 more pounds [than the others] by the time they run this race.

“I wanted the 20 post. You get something like 8, 10 or 11, and there’s a chance you’ll get bounced around.”
