Don Puathasnanon had 14 kills and 13 assists, and Paul DiSimone added 10 kills and seven blocks as Granada Hills High defeated Roosevelt, 15-2, 15-3, 15-9, in a City Section 4-A Division first-round playoff match at Granada Hills.

The Highlanders (12-2) won a first-round match for the 11th consecutive season.

Mike Ripberger had seven kills and Kirk Matsuzaki added 18 assists for the third-seeded Highlanders.

In other first-round playoff matches:

Chatsworth d. Banning, 15-3, 15-2, 15-1--Stephen Wiessner had nine kills in a 4-A match at Chatsworth.

Chris Wilson added six kills for the second-seeded Chancellors (12-2).

Venice d. Kennedy, 15-6, 15-7, 14-16, 15-4--Steven Manzano had 25 kills for the Gondoliers in a 4-A match at Venice.

Jeff Toon had 15 kills and eight blocks for 12th-seeded Kennedy.

Steven Brown added 14 kills for fifth-seeded Venice (9-5), which plays Friday at fourth-seeded San Pedro.

Van Nuys d. Franklin, 15-5, 16-14, 15-6--Larry Najera had 12 kills and three aces for the seventh-seeded Wolves (8-6) in a 3-A match at Van Nuys.

The Wolves, who will play at second-seeded Fairfax on Friday, held a 10-2 lead in the second game and survived an 8-0 run by the Panthers.

Devon Berry had 11 kills and nine blocks, and Eugene Kwong had 10 kills and five blocks.

Canoga Park d. North Hollywood, 15-2, 15-9, 16-14--Ron Salamanca had 15 kills in a 3-A match at Canoga Park.

Carloes Harper did not play because of personal reasons, but Adil Khan had 11 blocks in his place.

Fourth-seeded Canoga Park (13-1) beat 13th-seeded North Hollywood in five games during a regular-season meeting.

Sylmar d. Gardena, 15-5, 15-6, 15-10--Kevin Dawes had nine kills and 13 digs, and Toni Linares added eight kills and five blocks for the Spartans (13-1) in a 3-A match at Sylmar.

The third-seeded Spartans play sixth-seeded Jefferson on Friday at Sylmar.

Grant d. Belmont, 12-15, 15-6, 15-9, 15-9--Vita Chau had 20 kills and Ki Chung added 11 blocks in a 3-A match at Grant.

The eighth-seeded Lancers (11-3) play at top-seeded Eagle Rock on Friday.

Eagle Rock d. Monroe, 15-7, 15-10, 15-4--The 16th-seeded Vikings lost a 3-A match to the top-seeded team at Eagle Rock.
