Sewer Line Planned to Help Prevent Landslides in Cove

Rancho Palos Verdes plans to eliminate septic tanks and add a sewer system in the Abalone Cove area to help prevent a landslide.

City Manager Paul Bussey said plans to find a consultant who will acquire the easements for the project are underway and the city hopes to have the $2-million system built within a year. Bussey said the sewer system is part of a landslide prevention project.

Abalone Cove has been designated a landslide area on the peninsula because there is bentonite in the earth, a slippery clay-like substance that can cause landslides.

The area was damaged in 1974 by a landslide and again about 10 years ago. Bussey said other plans to prevent future landslides include making improvements in the drainage system.
