BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : Baseball Still Fails in Minority Hiring

Share

Minority hiring in major league baseball has changed little in the past seven years, despite promises from owners to improve ethnic diversity.

The percentage of blacks working for major league baseball teams has not changed since 1989 and the percentage of women has declined by 3%.

Nine percent of front-office employees on the 28 teams are black, baseball said in its first report on minority hiring in two years. Seven percent are Hispanic, up from 6% in 1994 and from 5% in 1989. Asian employees have held steady at 2%. Minorities comprise 18% of the teams’ front-office staffs, up from 17% in 1994 and 15% in 1989.
