Four-Star Films : ‘The Heiress’

Share

This prestigious 1949 film is prototypical William Wyler: a literate, highly polished, unspontaneous but pictorially striking adaptation of Henry James’ “Washington Square.” Score by Aaron Copland, meticulous art direction by Harry Horner and excellent performances by Oscar winner Olivia de Havilland (as the plain and exploited spinster heiress, above right), Ralph Richardson (as her crushingly protective father) and Montgomery Clift (perfection itself as her heartless, manipulative suitor, above left) (Disney Monday at midnight).
