SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Marco Evans forgot his driver. Brian Vranesh putted with his sand wedge. Tyler Foster changed his grip.

All three ended up with decent scores in the City 5-A League golf championships Tuesday at River Ridge Golf Club, but Todd Golditch of Chatsworth just played a conventional round and shot a two-over par 74 to win the individual title.

Golditch’s score also led the Chancellors, who had four players in the top seven, to the team title with a five-player total of 398.

Grant, which had three of the top eight individuals, shot 416 to finish second. Sean Oriti’s 76 led the Lancers.

Granada Hills, led by Ben Krug’s 80 and Vranesh’s 85, finished third at 426.

“I just played solidly,” Golditch said. “I was hitting the ball nice and kept it down the middle.”

Granada Hills entered the tournament as the consensus favorite but never got untracked. Vranesh three-putted seven times through 14 holes, then decided to switch to his sand wedge on the greens. He did not three-putt again.

“My putter wasn’t working,” said Vranesh, who added that he has used his sand wedge to putt in other tournaments.

Evans of Chatsworth loaned his driver to his father in the morning because he forgot he was playing in Tuesday’s match. He was one of several players who had never played the course before.

“It looked long,” he said. “But I kept it in play with my 3-wood and I got my approach shots close.”

Evans, who had been in such a slump that he was relegated to the last group of the day, carded a 78--good enough for third place.

Foster of Grant recently changed to a self-taught grip to correct a hook. His right fingers overlap his left fingers and his thumbs cross. No part of his right hand touches the club.

He finished eighth at 82.

Joining Golditch, Oriti, Evans, Krug and Foster on the All-League team were Dusty Gilman of Chatsworth with an 80, Jordan DiNapoli of Grant at 80 and Scott Brokaw of Chatsworth at 81.
