Police are seeking the public’s help in finding a man who accosted a 12-year-old girl Sunday, took her to a secluded spot near some railroad tracks and raped her before the girl managed to break loose and call for help.

The girl was at a mini-mall with her mother about noon Sunday near South Main and St. Gertrude streets when she persuaded her mom to let her go swimming at a cousin’s house nearby, Sgt. Bob Clark said.

The girl was headed south on Main Street toward her cousin’s house when the man grabbed her, near Dyer Road, Clark said.

The assailant put a chokehold on the girl, took her to a secluded spot at the nearby railroad tracks and sexually assaulted her, police said. Some passersby spied the commotion, and the girl was able to run away and summon help, Clark said.

Police described the assailant, who spoke only Spanish, as about 30 years old, 5 foot 9, and 160 to 170 pounds. He has a light complexion, sandy-colored short hair and a day-old growth of beard. He was wearing a brown T-shirt with horizontal stripes, black jeans, black leather shoes and a black square-faced wristwatch.

Anyone with information on the crime should call Investigator Ben Rodriguez of the Santa Ana Police Department’s sex-crimes detail at (714) 647-5166.
