Scattered Showers Move Through Area

A mild storm from the Gulf of Alaska danced over Ventura County on Thursday, dropping less than a tenth of an inch of rain on most of the county before moving off into the east, meteorologists said.

Showers were scattered and mostly gentle, doing little to boost below-normal rainfall levels. Thousand Oaks and Oxnard reported just trace amounts of rain, while mountainous Ojai received a little more than a quarter inch.

According to national weather forecaster Bill Hoffer, the weekend weather should be fine, with low clouds in the mornings burning off into hazy afternoon sunshine.

Highs will be in the upper 70s and the low 80s, with overnight lows in the 40s.

The five-day forecast shows no rain, and Hoffer said Thursday’s rain is likely to be the season’s last.

“In June there should be zilch,” he said.

Even though the rain was gentle, drivers around the county rode their brakes during the morning commute. The California Highway Patrol reported no rain-related accidents.

Ventura police attributed the cause of a two-car collision on Telephone Road just after 9 a.m. to human error, but said the rain may have made an overturned van slide farther.

In that accident, police said driver Jason Fisher, 20, of Ventura, made a wide right-hand turn on a red light, hitting a van driven by Kevin Witt, 38, of Ojai.

The van flipped into the median, but Witt and his passenger, 71-year-old Mike Zirolli, of Santa Barbara, were not seriously hurt.
