USC Is Beaten, 6-2, in Opener

Senior left-hander Matt Smith pitched six shutout innings and center fielder Jamie Porter went two for four with a three-run home run as Northern Division champion Washington scored a 6-2 victory over USC, the Southern Division champion, in the opening game of the Pacific 10 championships Thursday night at Dedeaux Field.

Game 2 will be tonight at 7:30, also at Dedeaux Field, with Game 3, if necessary, Saturday at 1 p.m.

Porter hit his home run off USC reliever Mike Penney in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Huskies improved to 30-26.

The Trojans’ runs came on a solo homer by Jeff Inglin in the seventh inning and on an RBI single by Chad Moeller in the ninth.

USC starter Seth Etherton saw his record fall to 12-2. The Trojans are 39-14-1.
