County to Consider Golf Course Plan

Share

Ventura County supervisors on Tuesday will be asked to sign an agreement allowing a Nebraska-based developer to build an 18-hole golf course at the county-owned Camarillo Regional Park.

In conjunction with the golf course, another developer has proposed a 16,000-seat amphitheater inside the park, a regional venue that would be built by Avalon Productions, the same company that owns the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater.

Earlier this year, the Board of Supervisors decided to break the parks and harbors division into separate departments. The move was designed to encourage county parks to become self-sufficient.

In order to do that, park officials have been considering development proposals that could draw tourists and visitors. The plan to develop Camarillo Regional Park into a money-making enterprise is the first effort.

Peter S. Pedroff, director of the county General Services Agency, which oversees the parks and harbor, said Ventura County would receive $100,000 in option purchase fees for the projects, as well as $300,000 during the first full year that both attractions are open.

The county could receive as much as $650,000 a year from the golf course and amphitheater in ensuing years, Pedroff said.
