JetHawks Down and Out, 10-4, Against San Jose

TIMES STAFF WRITER

The JetHawks looked across the field at the Hangar on Wednesday night and saw the team they used to be.

The San Jose Giants seemed to get hits whenever they needed, outs whenever they needed and solid defense.

The JetHawks got none of the above and lost, 10-4, before a disinterested crowd of 3,778.

The teams continued toward opposite ends of the California League. The Giants earned their 10th consecutive victory while the JetHawks, once 18-9, suffered their 17th loss in 20 games.

“It reminded me a lot of the way we were playing at the start of the season,” Manager Dave Brundage said. “We were making breaks, playing aggressive. We were finding ways to win.”

The Giants, whose 30-16 record is the best in the league, scored seven runs with two out.

The decisive four-run rally in the third started with two out and nobody on base. JetHawk starter Marino Santana walked Craig Mayes and gave up three consecutive hits, three runs scoring. A fourth scored on shortstop Luis Molina’s error.

San Jose’s single runs in the fourth and sixth also came after two were out.

Much of the damage was done by San Jose’s Jesse Ibarra, who had four hits, and Bobby Bonds Jr. and Mayes, who each had three.

The JetHawks (21-26) managed nine hits, only one with two out and runners in scoring position.

They left two runners on in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth. In the fifth, Andy Augustine grounded into an inning-ending double play with two runners aboard.

Their only clutch hit, in the sixth, was a blooper by Jose Cruz Jr. that got caught in the wind and dropped into left field, driving in a run to pull the JetHawks to within 7-4.

Just when the JetHawks got to within striking distance of the Giants, San Jose added three runs in the top of the seventh.

Bonds and Todd Wilson each singled and scored on Edwards Guzman’s triple. Guzman scored on a sacrifice fly.
