Fishing Tourney to Aid Hatchery Program

A “catch and release” bass fishing tournament Saturday in Newport Bay will benefit a local bass hatchery program.

The state Department of Fish and Game and Carlsbad-based Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute have helped local anglers put together a hatchery program to replenish white sea bass and other depleted indigenous species, tournament organizers said.

“We plan on releasing 400,000 white sea bass in coastal waters within the next year,” said Jim Paulk, president of United Anglers of Southern California.

The event will also help marine biologists to study the spotted sea bass. Anglers will be asked to record weight and length of each fish caught.

The tournament, sponsored by Orange County automotive group Team MacPherson, will be from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The cost is $100 for each two-person boat. Information: (714) 846-8259.
