The Toronto Blue Jays have released former Cy Young Award winner Frank Viola, 36, who was 1-3 with a 7.71 earned-run average in six starts. . . . The Chicago Cubs’ Jose Guzman, trying to come back after shoulder surgery in June, 1994, pitched six innings for triple-A Iowa, giving up five hits, three walks, four runs and striking out two. . . . The Philadelphia Phillies recalled right-handed pitcher Carlos Crawford from triple-A Scranton-Wilkes-Barre, and he’ll make his major league debut Friday in place of injured Mike Grace. . . . The Texas Rangers released infielder Jeff Frye from his contract with triple-A Oklahoma City so he could sign with the Boston Red Sox. . . . Former major league infielder Pete Coscarart, 82, was in intensive care after suffering a heart attack following his induction into the Brooklyn Dodger Hall of Fame.
