JETHAWKS REPORT : Moore Hopes Stuff Still A OK

Share

Good news for the JetHawks. Bad news for Trey Moore.

Moore, a 23-year-old left-hander who dominated the California League last season, was shipped back from double A Wednesday to join the JetHawk rotation. He will start Saturday against the San Bernardino Stampede at the Hangar.

Moore was 14-6 with a 3.09 earned-run average for the Riverside Pilots. This season he was 1-6 with a 7.71 ERA for the Port City Roosters.

“I think this will be a wake-up call for him,” JetHawk Manager Dave Brundage said. “He has the opportunity to go from a last-place team [Port City] to a team in the thick of the race.”

Brundage said he felt Moore had the best stuff of any pitcher in the Cal League last season.

The Times has learned that outfielder Jose Cruz Jr., second baseman Jason Cook, outfielder Marcus Sturdivant and pitcher Ken Cloude have been named to play in the California League All-Star game. . . . The JetHawks were a player short on Wednesday because right-hander Clint Gould was sent to triple-A Tacoma for a one-game stint with the Rainiers, whose staff has been short-handed due to frequent promotions to the injury-riddled Seattle Mariners. . . . Third baseman Carlos Villalobos took ground balls Wednesday for the first time since jamming his left shoulder in a home-plate collision May 24. . . . The JetHawks will probably not get any immediate help from the amateur draft. Typically, only high-round picks from four-year colleges begin their careers in advanced Class-A leagues, such as the Cal League. Of the Mariners’ first 10 picks, only two came from four-year schools--fourth-rounder Denny Stark, a right-handed pitcher from Toledo, and ninth-rounder Rob Luce, a right-hander from Nevada Las Vegas.
