Rules on Cell Phone Antennas Weighed

Share

Racing to get an ordinance in place before the city gets deluged with applications, the City Council on Monday will consider adopting new rules regulating the installation of cellular phone antennas.

The council is trying to rush the ordinance before a wave of new requests by an array of companies hoping to improve their services.

The antennas are used to fill cellular phone transmission gaps caused by obstacles such as hills and tall buildings.

The city froze new applications for antenna installation two weeks ago to work out the new rules.

“We just had to beat the applications that are already in the pipeline,” said Councilman Paul Miller.

Details of the new ordinance have not been disclosed, but they probably will include rules about the size of the antennas and their placement on local buildings, Miller said.
