Don Grolnick; Composer, Pianist and Producer

Don Grolnick, 48, pianist, songwriter and producer who worked with Bonnie Raitt and Paul Simon and accompanied such singers as Linda Ronstadt and Bette Midler. His compositions were described by The Times’ late jazz critic Leonard Feather as “an intense blend of mystery, suspense and driving post-bop.” Since 1974, Grolnick had worked as pianist, bandleader and producer for James Taylor. He grew up on Long Island, N.Y., attended Tufts University and in 1971 joined the jazz-rock band Dreams. Among his compositions was “Nothing Personal,” frequently heard in performances by saxophonist Michael Brecker. Grolnick also produced Brecker’s “Don’t Try This at Home,” which won a Grammy in 1988 for best jazz instrumental performance. On June 1 in New York City of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
