Boss Trails

The American Hiking Society ranks Thousand Oaks among the 30 best cities in the country for trails. . . . As a charter member of the Trail Town Hall of Fame, Thousand Oaks was noted for its 75 miles of paths. “We’re pretty sure Thousand Oaks has the most amount of trails for its size city in the country,” said local cyclist Mark Langton, who made the nomination.

Play Ball

The Ventura City Council will step up to the plate tonight over plans for an $18.7-million minor league baseball stadium. . . . The last local venture into Class-A ball lasted a single season, when the 1986 Ventura Gulls averaged only 550 fans a game. The team played at Ventura College, which had no lights, no locker rooms--and no beer. “It was dead on arrival,” Councilman Ray Di Guilio said.

Stop and Go

Now that Ventura is almost finished computerizing traffic signals, you can follow the speed limit on Thompson Boulevard and catch mostly green lights. . . . Just don’t try that everywhere. “Main Street has some problems because of the interaction with pedestrians and parking,” says city traffic expert Tom Mericle. Santa Clara Street and Thompson, he says, “are coordinated much better.”
