A Santa Paula man, shot in an argument last week, was arrested Monday on suspicion of kidnapping a 27-year-old woman and trying to shoot a Ventura man, Ventura County sheriff’s deputies said.

Todd Hubbard, 37, who spent the weekend in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm, was booked into Ventura County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, burglary and kidnapping on Monday night, deputies said. He is being held in lieu of $1-million bail.

According to sheriff’s detectives, the incident began early Friday morning when a series of threatening phone calls were received by Tom Smith, 38.

Armed with a shotgun, detectives said, Hubbard then drove to Smith’s home on Norway Drive near Ventura Avenue about 8:45 a.m. and confronted Smith, who also had a shotgun.

Detectives said the two men fought and then exchanged gunfire, though only Hubbard was hit. After the scuffle, deputies said Hubbard broke into Smith’s home and took Tonye Hurley away in his car at gunpoint.

Hurley was later released unharmed, detectives said.

Detectives said they do not know why the two men argued, but that the investigation is ongoing. No one else has been arrested in the case.
