Area Students Named Science Fair Finalists
Five students from San Fernando Valley elementary schools will compete in the final round of an upcoming science fair to win a trip to the U.S. Parent/Child Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala.
The students are among 22 finalists in the citywide Celebrate Science Fair competition sponsored annually by LA’s BEST (Better Educated Students for Tomorrow).
The students’ projects--including experiments and presentations on frogs, insects, satellites, tornadoes and water conservation--will be displayed in the Los Angeles Times’ Harry Chandler Auditorium on Saturday. The Times is a sponsor of the science fair, along with Delta Air Lines and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
The Valley students advanced to the finals by winning local contests. Those students are Henry Calderon, a fifth-grader from Canoga Park Elementary School; Michelle Schultz, a fifth-grader from Hart Street Elementary School in Canoga Park; Briawna Williams, a sixth-grader from Langdon Avenue Elementary School in North Hills; Emmanuel Garcia, a fifth-grader from Napa Street Elementary School in Northridge, and Marilyn Jimenez, a fifth-grader from Sylmar Elementary School.
Three of the 22 student finalists will be selected to attend the space camp with their parents the weekend of June 27. The 19 runners-up will get free trips to the Woodcraft Rangers Science Camp at Stanley Ranch near Castaic.
Created in 1988, LA’s BEST provides free after-school enrichment activities--including tutoring, sports and arts and crafts projects--to children at 22 elementary schools located in neighborhoods identified as vulnerable to gangs, drugs and crime.
