Alarcon Plans Council Session in Community

In an effort to bring City Hall closer to the people, Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alarcon has proposed that the council hold a special meeting in Sylmar next month.

Although the meeting has to be approved by the full council, it is likely to support Alarcon’s request.

The council meeting on July 16 at Mission College would be the second in the San Fernando Valley in 10 months. The last was held in October at Pierce College in Woodland Hills and attracted about 350 residents, prompting the fire marshal to warn audience members not to block the aisles and exits.

Alarcon said the meeting’s agenda will focus on issues of interest in the Valley, such as disputes over local landfills, construction of new libraries and community policing issues.

Last year, the council balked at a plan to hold regular meetings outside of City Hall. But several council members, including Alarcon, have nonetheless pressed for special meetings in outlying areas of the city.

The July meeting, which will start at 10 a.m. at the Campus Center, will be videotaped and played later on cable access Channel 35.
