Santa Ana firefighter Brian Hopp, above, and son Brian Jr. hit Huntington Beach on Thursday on what astronomers say was the longest day of the year: the summer solstice marking the beginning of the longest season of the year (93.66 days). In part because 1996 is a leap year, the day fell earlier than usual.

At the Greens, an executive putting course in Irvine, the longest hole is 127 feet, so there’s no need for drivers or golf carts. Its owners describe the manicured course--with sand traps, ponds and rough--as “golf in miniature,” and plan to expand beyond Orange County. Favored by the lunch hour crowd, course fees are $10.
