Back from the Dead and lived to tell about it! Starting Saturday, the Huntington Beach Art Center takes a long look at the phenomenon of the Grateful Dead, the band that lasted 20 years and attracted droves of tie-dyed followers who prided themselves on how many concerts they’d seen and how many parking lots they’d partied in. Objects in the show range from ticket stubs and photographs to rare footage and bootleg concert recordings.

What better companion piece than the first survey exhibition of Fred Tomaselli’s idiosyncratic paintings? Referring to the many ways (some legal) that people choose to avoid dealing with real life, these works contain genuine psychoactive materials--in pill or plant form--embedded in layers of resin.

Pop

Been to a zillion local band shows but never could make out the lyrics? Intrigued by O.C.’s bountiful punk-pop scene but leery of moshers and high decibels? The first-ever Unplugged Night at Linda’s Doll Hut offers a rare chance to check out the songs without the wattage and maybe even catch some blazing rockers in a rare ballad mode.

Featured in 15-minute initial sets, plus various anticipated collaborations, are such accomplished local songsmiths as Steve Soto and Greg Antista of Joyride, Dan Root of One Hit Wonder, Brian Coakley of Rule 62, the Ziggens, Charlie Glancy of D/Railed, Russell Scott, Eddie Wilson of Hellbound Hayride, John Maurer of Fuel and newcomer Colleen Rider.
