WEEKEND: Daddyz on Stage

The sound of Silver Strand is the roar of perfect tubes and local surfers stretching “whoa” into a four syllable word. It’s also the Ska Daddyz, a party-animal dance band made up of hard-core fin-heads. The band will play twice this weekend, but not at their usual haunt, the Bombay in Ventura. You can find the Ska Daddyz--and their legion of fans--at Mullarkey’s inside Oxnard’s Radisson Suite Hotel on Friday. Saturday the band will be at the new and happening venue in Camarillo, the Stage.

For those who haven’t seen the band for a while, one of the best bass players in these parts, Paul Shinn, is back from his hiatus and has rejoined the band.

SUNDAY: Under the Stars

Brandeis-Bardin Institute will bring back its popular summer Jewish music series “Under the Stars” when it presents “A Little Jewish Night Music: The Melodies and Entertainers of Brandeis-Bardin.”

Held outdoors at the institute’s picturesque mountaintop Performing Arts Plaza, the 7:30 p.m. concert will be performed by violinist Myla Wingard, tenor David Katz, The Brandeis-Bardin International Klezmer Ensemble and others. The ninth annual concert series also includes:

* July 14: The John Bilezikjian Ensemble: The Music of “Sepharad” and the Middle East.

* July 28: An Evening of Chamber Music, featuring the Brandeis-Bardin Chamber Ensemble.

* Aug. 10: The Klezmatics: Live and in Person!

Beneath the Moon

Do you go for a hike only once in a blue moon? Well, now is the time.

You can hike by moonlight when naturalists from the Conejo Recreation and Park District lead a 2 1/2-hour evening hike into Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks.

This isn’t just any old full moon. Sunday’s moon is a blue moon--a rarity which occurs only every three or so years when two full moons fall within a calendar month. The second one is called a blue moon. The first full moon of the month occurred June 1.

You’ll get a good look at the moon on this 2 1/2-mile loop across Stagecoach Bluff to Lizard Rock. Hike leaders also will chat about native plant and animal life. The hike starts at 7 p.m. at the entrance to Wildwood Park at the west end of Avenida de Los Arboles and Big Sky Drive. The cost is $3. Preregistration required. Information: 381-2737.

UP THE COAST

* The Oak Park Cultural Festival will travel, thematically speaking, to the bayou this weekend for the “Ragin’ Cajun Festival.” Here’s your chance at a steamy bowlful of jambalaya, chicken gumbo, red beans ‘n’ rice and other spicy treats. Five hundred pounds of crawfish will be flown in from Louisiana, some of which will be devoured during a Crawfish Eating Contest.

There’s also live Cajun, jazz and blues music, plus game booths, animal acts and more. The festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Festival proceeds benefit the Santa Barbara Therapeutic Riding Academy. Oak Park is located at Alamar Avenue and Junipero Street, Santa Barbara. Information: 969-6606.
