School Board’s Slavkin Won’t Seek Reelection

Share

Los Angeles School Board President Mark Slavkin has decided not to seek reelection to his Westside/West San Fernando Valley seat when his term expires in June 1997.

In a prepared statement, the two-term board member--who made a previous unsuccessful run for state Assembly--said he does not plan to run for elective office “in the near future” but would not rule it out “down the line.”

Slavkin faced a recall attempt two years ago after he publicly opposed Prop. 187, the anti-illegal immigration initiative. The recall failed when backers did not gather enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.

First elected with teachers union backing in 1989, Slavkin has been among the strongest advocates on the board for the LEARN school reform program, which gives teachers and parents a stronger voice in school decisions.
