He’s not going to be Lord Boris Becker.

A mystery buyer paid $255,000 Wednesday for the title the Lordship of Wimbledon, but the three-time Wimbledon champion said he wasn’t the man.

Becker was rumored for weeks to be interested. But he apparently changed his mind when he was unable to talk with the present lord himself--Earl Spencer, the brother of Princess Diana.

“You know, I’m quite happy with being Boris Becker to tell you the truth,” he said. “I don’t know whether a title is going to make a whole lot of difference in my life. It’s something else if you receive something like that, but if you have to buy a title, it cannot be worth that much.”

Norman Plastow, chairman of the Wimbledon Society, said Becker didn’t understand what it takes to be a lord.

“The title is one which carries a lot of responsibility and he should not buy it for his own amusement,” Plastow said.
