Dollase Becomes Second Trainer With Two Starters in Gold Cup

Richard Mandella isn’t the only trainer who will have two starters in the $1-million Hollywood Gold Cup on Sunday.

Already scheduled to send out Helmsman in the 1 1/4-mile race, trainer Wally Dollase said Wednesday he will also be represented by Nonproductiveasset.

“He’s been training great and I know he can get the distance,” said Dollase. “I was planning to go in the Bel Air [Handicap on July 14], but I decided to take a crack at it.”

Third as the 6-5 favorite behind The Exeter Man and Dramatic Gold in the Sultry Song Handicap on May 17 in his last start, Nonproductiveasset will be the light weight of the field at 114 pounds and will be ridden by Rene Douglas.

With Soul Of The Matter, who would have been favored, out of the Gold Cup, Corey Nakatani has regained the mount on Mr Purple.

When entries are taken this morning, a field of seven is likely for the Gold Cup: Helmsman, Nonproductiveasset, the Mandella pair of Siphon and Dare And Go, Geri, who arrived at Hollywood Park Wednesday afternoon, Tinners Way and Mr Purple.

Horse Racing Notes

Riding in California for the first time since last fall, Pat Valenzuela was third on 30-1 shot Pretty Kathleen in Wednesday’s first race. Valenzuela is not named on any horses on today’s program, but he is scheduled to ride three Friday night. . . . Favored Swiss Yodeler made it three victories in as many starts with a 3 1/2-length triumph over Renteria and five other 2-year-olds in Wednesday’s $61,150 Haggin Stakes. Trained by Mike Harrington for owner Heinz Steinmann, the son of Eastern Echo was ridden by Alex Solis and completed the 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.
