Homeless Encampment to Get Proceeds From Show

Share

When it first appeared in 1993, the homeless encampment of domed dwellings just off the Harbor Freeway near 8th Street in downtown Los Angeles struck many as sort of a no-man’s land, a place where if they wandered in, they might never come out.

Now, the image of the Dome Village has drastically changed.

On Thursday, the camp was visited by two people from Disney who are planning to write a movie about the encampment. And on Sunday, sponsors of an awards show honoring celebrities who are active in homeless and community causes say they will contribute 50% of the proceeds to the Dome Village.

Sunday’s event, the inaugural Golden Dome Awards, is being produced by Nick Edenetti, a singer known for his Frank Sinatra impersonation who heads a public relations firm.

“I saw the place a few months ago and was blown away,” Edenetti said. “I was like many people who just want to sweep the problem under the carpet, but I was so impressed with this that I wanted to help out.”

Actors James Edward Olmos, Louis Gossett Jr. and Lindsay Wagner and singer Connie Stevens will be honored at the awards show.

Tickets for Sunday’s awards show at the Regent Beverly Wilshire are going for $300, $250 and $200. The event includes food, entertainment and an auction.
