Developer Unveils Plan for PCH Tract

A developer unveiled a conceptual plan this week for a time-share resort, hotel, conference center and homes along 46 acres of oceanfront property on Pacific Coast Highway between Beach Boulevard and Huntington Street.

Robert Mayer Corp. is proposing 280 to 320 time-share units, to be built by Hilton Grand Vacations Co.; a 300-room hotel and adjacent conference center; and a residential community.

Members of the City Council and the Planning Commission reviewed the proposal Monday and raised a number of questions, which the council voted to refer to the city staff.

The top concern was to ensure that the development brings economic benefits to the city. Mayor Dave Sullivan said that because any project in the area in question is important to boosting the city’s tourism industry, officials want to “make sure that the project is viable.”

Stephen K. Bone, president of Newport Beach-based Mayer, said he brought the proposal to the council to get feedback before proceeding.

The city and Mayer Corp. reached an agreement in August 1988 for construction of a retail and residential development, a health club and spa, and four hotels. The only part of the plan completed so far is the Waterfront Hilton hotel.
