Fire Station Included in 1996-97 City Budget

More than $100,000 in next year’s annual budget will pay for equipment for a new fire station on the south end of the city, but there will be no raises for city employees.

City Council members last week approved the $22.4-million budget for fiscal 1996-97, calling it a “no-growth, maintenance” fund.

The money makes up the city’s general fund and, except for modest increases in the fire and police budgets, reflects the status quo, City Manager Jerry L. Bankston stressed.

He said that eight currently vacant positions, including those of a secretary and a building inspector, will not be filled in the coming year and there are no plans to increase city staff or pay. “There are no cuts in services or reductions in staff either,” he said.

Bankston said the $100,000 will equip and furnish a new fire station that will be built soon on Idaho Street, south of Imperial Highway, by a developer who is constructing homes in the area.

He said he expects the city’s budget to grow in the coming years through sales tax revenue now that major retail stores have opened in La Habra.
