Coyotes Make Hay About New Coach

The Winnipeg Jets officially became the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday and hired Calgary Flame assistant Don Hay as their first head coach.

“Our goal will be to become a Stanley Cup contender,” Hay said during a news conference.

Financial terms of Hay’s three-year contract were not disclosed. Hay, 42, had two years remaining on his three-year contract with Calgary that was worth a reported $900,000.

Hay replaces Terry Simpson, fired by the Jets on May 14. Simpson had a 43-46-7 record in 1 1/2 seasons.

Boxing

Newly crowned International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion Michael Moorer was accused in Monessen, Pa., of creating a disturbance at a social club early Sunday.

Police said they responded to a complaint of a loud and disorderly man at a the club at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the town, which is 25 miles south of Pittsburgh.

An amateur boxer died from head injuries he suffered during a bout, police in Richmond, Ky. said. The dead boxer, Dale Foreman, 24, of Cincinnati, walked to his stool after the fight was stopped, but collapsed later.

Cycling

Italian Mario Cipollini won the 153.4-mile second stage of the Tour de France at Wasquehal, France. Switzerland’s Alex Zulle retained the overall lead he earned in the opening prologue Saturday.

In Sunday’s stage, judges bumped Cipollini from second-place to 37th after the Italian national champion nearly drove a pair of riders into the fence.

Five-time Tour de France champion Miguel Indurain finished 49th. Indurain, looking to become the first man to win the Tour six times, is in sixth place, 12 seconds behind. American Lance Armstrong finished 169th. He stood 54th overall, 58 seconds behind.

Jurisprudence

A woman convicted of marijuana possession two years ago was the only black chosen for the 12-person jury in Dallas Cowboy receiver Michael Irvin’s drug possession trial in Dallas.

The only other minority on the six-male, six-female jury is an Asian female. Both alternates are women, one a black.

“This is not a jury of his peers,” argued defense attorney Ron Goranson. “This is not going to bode well for the community.”

Irvin is charged with felony cocaine possession and a misdemeanor marijuana count stemming from an incident in an Irving hotel March 4. Two topless dancers and a former teammate were with him at the time. The women also were indicted.

Coach Tommy West permanently dismissed two players from the Clemson football team after they were charged last week with intent to distribute marijuana. Antwuan Wyatt, one of the country’s top return men, and running back Anthony Downs were released on $2,500 personal recognizance bonds. A trial is set for July 15 in Pickens County

Two University of Miami football players suspended for taking part in the assault of a track star were arrested in Coral Gables. Linebackers James Burgess, 22, and Jeffrey Taylor, 22, surrendered to police and were ordered by a judge to wear electronic bracelets until the trial so authorities can monitor their movements. The two men were arrested on one count of burglary with battery, according to a police statement. Burgess and Taylor teamed with receiver Jammi German for the June 19 attack on track team captain Maxwell Voce, authorities have said.

Miscellany

The Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan said they have agreed to consider a request by Hideki Irabu to join the major leagues. The 27-year-old Irabu led the Pacific League in strikeouts and earned-run average last season, when he compiled an 11-11 record for the Marines. Irabu, who makes about $1.2 million a year, is 4-5 with a 2.49 ERA this season.

Emma George of Australia broke her own world record for the women’s pole vault at 14 feet 6 inches at a women’s track meet in Reims, France.

Doctor Khumalo of Columbus and Roberto Donadoni of New York/New Jersey were added to Major League Soccer’s East All-Star team for the game against the West on July 14 at East Rutherford, N.J. Mo Johnston from Kansas City was added to the West team. As expected, Galaxy defender Dan Calichman was also added to the West team.

Former USC head coach Bob Boyd was named an assistant basketball coach at Louisiana State by head Coach Dale Brown. . . . Betsy G. Stephenson was named associate athletics director/senior women’s administrator at UCLA. Stephenson held the same position at the University of Kansas.
