Obituaries : Walter E. Schreiner; Lifelong Oxnard Resident

Services are scheduled Friday for Walter E. Schreiner, a lifelong Oxnard resident who died Saturday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center. He was 75.

Schreiner attended classes at St. Joseph Institute Grammar School, Santa Clara High School and Ventura College before joining his father, Matt Schreiner, in the blacksmith trade.

After his father’s death, Walt and his brother, George, took over their father’s business, which by then was known as Matt Schreiner Farm Implement, until their retirement in 1970.

He was exalted ruler of Elks Lodge No. 1443 in 1957-58 and past vice president of the West Coast district. He was also a member of the Oxnard Knights of Columbus and inherited his father’s membership in the Point Mugu Duck Club, where he served as president for many years. He was also an avid fisherman.

In addition to his brother, of Oxnard, Schreiner is survived by his wife of 40 years, Dafna; daughter Patricia Higgins of Redding, and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Outland.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Thursday at James A. Reardon Mortuary in Oxnard. A funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Friday at Santa Clara Church, 323 South E St., with Msgr. Charles O’Gorman officiating.

Graveside services will follow, conducted by members of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks No. 1443 at Santa Clara Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Ventura County Heart Assn., 1367 Del Norte Road, Camarillo, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
