BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : Staff Defends Its Honor

Share

The Dodgers remember the smug comments made during last weekend’s series against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, several verbal attacks on their pitching staff, and the intimation that perhaps the Dodger pitching staff was overrated.

“We don’t need to prove anything to anyone, least of all the Rockies,” Dodger reliever Mark Guthrie said on the eve of a four-game series at Dodger Stadium. “It’s more their style to pop off. Not ours.”

Said closer Todd Worrell: “Our pitching staff has been there from Day 1. I don’t think we have to prove anything. We didn’t pitch particularly well, and we walked too many batters, but we’ll see what happens this time.”

The Rockies sent a letter of apology to the Dodgers for showing negative statistics of them during their recent series on their video scoreboard. Dodger third base coach Joe Amalfitano complained about it after it was flashed that Dodger third baseman Mike Blowers was hitting .197 with runners in scoring position. Blowers responded with a triple.

“We’ve come to a simple solution,” Keli McGregor, senior vice president of the Rockies, wrote in his letter. “If it’s not appropriate to put up for our own team, we won’t put it up for a visiting team.”

It turns out that the Dodgers tied a National League record by hitting 16 home runs in three games Saturday through Monday.
