More Subway Stops on Wilshire Urged

Share

A Pacific Palisades group plans a demonstration Saturday aimed at persuading the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to study extending the Red Line subway west along Wilshire Boulevard past Western Avenue.

The protest by the Coalition for Rapid Transit will coincide with the opening of the Red Line extension from MacArthur Park to Western Avenue. The MTA board of directors in April rejected a motion to study a Wilshire route.

“The public deserves to have the benefit of a comprehensive analysis of the comparative routing of the subway down Wilshire Boulevard,” said James Watt McCormick, coalition president.

The MTA is studying a route that runs from Wilshire and Western down Arlington Avenue to Pico and San Vicente boulevards.

A federal law, passed after a 1985 methane gas explosion near Farmers Market, banned federal funding for tunneling under Wilshire Boulevard between La Brea and Fairfax avenues.
