Police Seeking Gunman Who Killed 1, Wounded 2

A gang-related confrontation left one teenager dead and two others injured, prompting a search Monday for a single gunman.

A few minutes before midnight Sunday, police responding to a call at Galway Street and Garden Grove Boulevard found three teenagers slumped over inside a black sedan.

According to authorities, youths in two other vehicles had approached the victims to ask about claiming a gang. The two drivers then tried to box in the sedan, Police Sgt. Mike Handfield said.

“The driver of the victims’ car somehow got away and went down Garden Grove Boulevard,” Handfield said.

At Galway Street, the sedan was again cornered and a male in his teens or early 20s stepped out of one car and walked toward the victims’ vehicle, again demanding to know which gang they supposedly belonged to, Handfield said.

The argument erupted into violence when the assailant fired at the victims’ sedan four to six times, authorities said.

Giao Nguyen, 19, of Garden Grove was struck in the neck and died at the scene. His 15-year-old brother, Bao, was wounded in the hip and was in critical condition Monday at UCI Medical Center in Orange. Both were in the back seat of the sedan.

A front-seat passenger, Yvonne Ha, 15, was shot in the leg as she tried to flee from the car. She was in stable condition at the same hospital.

The sedan’s driver and another passenger were not injured.

Homicide investigators are working with gang unit officers to identify the gunman, Handfield said.
