JETHAWK REPORT : Major Leaguer, Minor Detour

Manager Dave Brundage is hoping his pitchers take copious mental notes on Bob Wolcott’s performance in a JetHawk uniform tonight.

“He just shows there’s a big difference between pitching and throwing,” Brundage said. “You’d be really surprised how hard Bob Wolcott can throw, but rarely does he need to.”

Wolcott, 22, was rushed to the major leagues and made a splash by winning Game 1 of the American League championship series for the Seattle Mariners last year. He did it with a fastball that he throws barely harder than 91 mph.

“It’s not how hard you throw it,” Brundage said, “it’s where you throw it.”

Wolcott, who will start for the JetHawks because his normal spot in the Mariner rotation falls during the All-Star break, will see one familiar face in the Lake Elsinore Storm’s lineup.

Joe Urso, in his fifth season in the California League, faced Wolcott in 1994, when Wolcott was pitching for Riverside.

“He always had my number,” Wolcott said. “He was always a tough out for me.”

Trey Moore will probably miss his turn in the rotation Friday night to rest his arm, Brundage said. Moore complained of stiffness in his arm and his velocity was down last Friday. Brundage hasn’t decided if Marino Santana or Brett Hinchliffe will take Moore’s place.
