Pro Beach Volleyball Event Begins in Huntington Beach

Both the women’s Team Norelco and the men’s Team OP will try to extend their winning streaks to three tournaments at the Bud Light Pro Beach Volleyball League event beginning today at Huntington Beach.

Women’s competition begins at 10 a.m. and continues Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. The women’s final is at 1 p.m. Saturday and will be shown live on ESPN.

Men’s competition begins at 2 p.m. Saturday and continues Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. The men’s final is at 3 p.m. Sunday and will be shown on a tape delay basis on ESPN.

Norelco has three tournament victories this season, including the last two.

Norelco is led by former UCLA players Samantha Shaver and Marissa Hatchett, former Louisiana State All-American Wendy Stammer and former Long Beach State All-American Joy McKienzie. Hatchett, from Sunny Hills High, leads the league in blocks with 58.

OP also has three tournament victories this season, including the last two that included men’s competition.

OP is led by 1984 Olympic gold medalist Dusty Dvorak, 38; former University of Hawaii all-American Carlos Briceno, and former USC All-American Tom Duke.

Former Edison High and UCLA player Mike Diehl, who leads the league in kills with 263 and in aces with 17, has left the OP team for personal reasons.
