Malin Advances to Hardcourt Finals

Gene Malin of Woodland Hills advanced to the finals of the United States Tennis Assn. men’s 45 hardcourt championships with a 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Peter Bronson of Scottsdale, Ariz., on Saturday morning at the Westlake Tennis and Swim Club.
Top-seeded Malin, 47, will face third-seeded Wesley Jackson of Albuquerque, N.M., today at 11 a.m. Jackson defeated fifth-seeded Tom Leonard of South Pasadena, 6-1, 6-2, in the other semifinal.
Malin is on target to win his third 45-plus hardcourt title in four years.
In afternoon doubles play, third-seeded Malin and Leonard lost to Bronson and Brian Cheney of Chandler, Ariz., 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) in a semifinal.
