Opening of Landfill Pushed Back to Aug. 5

The opening of the Sunshine Canyon Landfill above Granada Hills has been pushed back from mid-July to Aug. 5, a Browning-Ferris Industries spokesman said Wednesday.

The canyon, which is split between Los Angeles County and the city of Los Angeles, has been the source of a decade-long dispute that has drawn environmentalists, city and county governments and rival trash firms into the mix.

The North Valley Coalition of Concerned Citizens, which has battled against the dump for years, has at least one remaining challenge against the dump: an appeal on the safety of the dump’s liner with the State Water Quality Control Board.

A decision on whether the state water board will hear the appeal is expected within the next month.

Browning-Ferris had originally planned to open the county portion of the dump July 1, later moved the date to mid-July and finally decided to wait until Aug. 5, said Arnie Berghoff, a company spokesman.

“We could probably open earlier, but we want to make sure we do everything correctly,” Berghoff said. “We know we are going to be watched, and frankly, we welcome that.”
