Police asked the public for help Monday in the search for a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 39-year-old Anaheim man who was riding his bike on Brookhurst Street over the weekend.

Witnesses said the bicyclist was hit about 5 p.m. Sunday as he rode against traffic along the curb of the southbound lane of Brookhurst, just north of Crestwood Lane, Anaheim Police Sgt. Chris Kielich said.

Police say the cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, may have been struck as he tried to cut across traffic to the east side of Brookhurst.

The driver was described as a Hispanic man in his late 20s or early 30s with shoulder-length, dark, curly hair, Kielich said.

The car was a mid-1980s American model sedan, either pale yellow or tan, and was last seen traveling westbound on Katella Avenue, Kielich said.

The victim was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died. The name of the bicyclist was being withheld Monday as authorities sought to contact his family.
