Scott Sanders won his third straight start, striking out a season-high 11 and scattering four hits in 6 2/3 innings as the San Diego Padres beat the Florida Marlins 5-3 Monday.

Ken Caminiti again hurt Florida, driving in a run and scoring another. Caminiti is hitting .365 against the Marlins this season with nine RBIs.

Sanders (4-3), who came within one strikeout of his career high, has a 4.05 ERA and 28 strikeouts in his last 20 innings. He allowed three earned runs and walked four.

Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 23rd save.

Marlins starter Kevin Brown was unusually wild, hitting three batters.

His scoreless-inning streak ended at 18 in the first when he plunked two batters and allowed three consecutive singles as San Diego took a 3-0 lead.

Steve Finley and Caminiti hit RBI singles and Rob Deer drove in the third run on a fielder’s choice.

Brown (9-9), the league’s ERA leader, struck out six and had one wild pitch in six innings. His major league-leading ERA rose from 1.76 to 1.98.

The Padres extended their lead 4-1 in the third inning when Caminiti doubled and Brian Johnson did the same one out later.

San Diego made it 5-2 in the seventh on Wally Joyner’s sacrifice fly.

Florida scored runs in the first, sixth inning and seventh innings.

Devon White hit an RBI single in the first, and Terry Pendleton’s sacrifice fly in the sixth to cut San Diego’s lead to 4-2.

In the seventh, Quilvio Veras -- who had walked -- scored on a double by Edgar Renteria.

Marlins slugger Gary Sheffield was ejected by umpire Dana DeMuth in the first after throwing equipment onto the field following a strikeout. Sheffield, who has 28 home runs, felt he had foul-tipped a dropped third strike.
