Brown (10-9) gave up a leadoff single to Rickey Henderson, then retired 16 consecutive batters before Henderson singled in the sixth.

White, in a two-for-21 slump, doubled off Scott Sanders (4-4) to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth. The following inning, he reached over the wall in center to rob Steve Finley of a homer.

Jeff Conine and Terry Pendleton added solo homers in the eighth off Dario Veras.

Colorado 8, Chicago 2--The Colorado Rockies won consecutive road games for the first time since May 27-28, defeating the Cubs at Chicago behind homers from Andres Galarraga, Vinny Castilla and Ellis Burks.

Castilla hit a three-run homer in the fourth, Galarraga hit his 30th in the sixth and Burks hit a two-run drive in the seventh for an 8-0 lead.

Houston 4, San Francisco 1--Shane Reynolds (13-6) pitched a three hitter for his third complete game this season, leading the Astros over San Francisco at Houston.

Houston took a 2-0 lead in the first. Brian Hunter singled, Craig Biggio was hit by a pitch for the major league-leading 21st time and Jeff Bagwell walked, loading the bases. Derek Bell then hit a two-run single between shortstop and third base.

Philadelphia 7, Pittsburgh 6-- Jeff King, switched from first to second base for the ninth inning, misplayed Mike Lieberthal’s grounder with one out and allowed the winning run to score as the Phillies defeated the Pirates at Philadelphia.

Dave Doster doubled to open the ninth off Dan Plesac (3-3), and advanced to third on a groundout. Todd Zeile was intentionally walked before Lieberthal hit a hard two-hopper to King, who let the potential double play bounce off his glove and into short center as Doster raced home.

New York 5, St. Louis 4--Todd Hundley hit his 32nd homer and Butch Huskey added a two-run single as the Mets defeated the Cardinals at New York.

Hundley put the Mets ahead in the second when he connected on a 3-1 pitch and sent it into the right-field bullpen. New York made it 5-0 in the third on Huskey’s two-run single, Alex Ochoa’s run-scoring groundout and Edgardo Alfonzo’s run-scoring single.

Montreal 6, Cincinnati 2--Shane Andrews pounded Cincinnati pitching again with a homer and four runs batted in to lead the Expos at Montreal.

Andrews, 15-for-31 with six home runs and 17 RBIs against the Reds this season, hit a run-scoring single in the second inning and a three-run homer in the fourth.

Rheal Cormier (7-6) gave up two runs--one earned--and three hits in 5 2/3 innings, but left after Eric Davis hit a liner back to the mound that struck him on the right shin.
