A 12-year-old boy on his way to sell candy in his neighborhood Thursday afternoon was critically injured when he darted out in front of a van, police said.

The boy, whose name was not available, was traveling with a group of youngsters in the 900 block of Cypress Street about 3:30 p.m. when he decided to go back home, Police Lt. Jerry Cline said. The boy ran across Cypress Street in the path of a van traveling at 30 mph, which is within the speed limit in the area, Cline said.

The boy suffered major head injuries and was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was in critical condition Thursday. An adult with the group of children had just told the boy to be careful, Cline said.
