Good Thing Boxer Wasn’t Called Badluck

Featherweight boxer Somluck Khamsing of Thailand is surely the most aptly named of all 1996 Olympians.

Since winning his country’s first gold medal, Khamsing has been given about $1.6 million in cash from various companies and a lifelong government pension of $400 a month.

His latest reward--presented by the prime minister, Banharn Silpa-archa--is a $96,000 two-story, three-bedroom house.

Adding it up: Tennessee has added 10,043 seats to Neyland Stadium, bringing its capacity to 102,544. That’s 43 more seats than 102,501-seat Michigan Stadium and makes Neyland the largest in the country.

“It’s not something we aimed at. . . . It just came out that way,” said Doug Dickey, Tennessee’s athletic director.

And if you believe that, Dickey has some land he’d like to sell you too.

Seldom seen: A Western Baseball League game between the Bend (Ore.) Bandits and the Long Beach Riptide was abandoned after six innings this week because of . . . smoke?

Apparently, wild fires in the area caused the 50-year-old stadium in Bend to fill with smoke, creating poor visibility and bringing new meaning to the phrase “Who’s on first?”

Not to mention second and third.

Culture club: Brent Mayne, along with the rest of the New York Mets, is in Mexico for a three-game series against the San Diego Padres. He doesn’t think the team will take full advantage of the situation.

“I don’t know much about Monterrey,” Mayne said. “But I hear they have one of the great art museums in the world there. We’ll probably be told not to go.”

Fish lines: Former Miami Dolphin offensive lineman Larry Little is no fan of new Dolphin Coach Jimmy Johnson.

“Jimmy thinks he walks on water,” Little said. “But I doubt he’ll be as successful as he thinks.”

Little may recall Johnson’s first season at Dallas, when the Cowboys went 1-15.

Trivia answer: Bold Forbes, winner of the 1976 Derby (and the Belmont), now in retirement at Stone Farm in Paris, Ky., is 23.

And finally: Golfer Scott Hoch is no fan of St. Andrews, calling one of the world’s most famous courses “the worst piece of mess I’ve ever seen. I think they had some sheep and goats there that died and they just covered them over.”
