County Day Care

Share

I am writing as a social worker for a nonprofit organization. I applaud attempts to reform the welfare system and end the dependencies it has created. However, as I work with low-income families, I find that one of the greatest impediments to their rejoining the work force is the lack of affordable child care.

One way of solving this problem might be to develop a county-funded child care system that would provide employment for some and provide child care for others. By sponsoring such a program, Los Angeles County could use federal block grants to provide training for child care workers and then employ them in licensed centers for children whose parents have good job skills and need low-cost child care.

Many of my low-income families are willing and eager to work. County day care could provide an answer.
