Toledo Instructs Players to Ease Up

Coach Bob Toledo had to call a brief halt in the morning practice Saturday to tell his charges to stop hitting so hard. The workout was in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets, and some of the defensive players were a little more aggressive than the coaches planned.
“I like that,” Toledo said. “It’s always better to tell them to slow down than to try to get them to go faster.”

Scholarships have been awarded to five walk-on players: kicker Greg Andrasek, who made all four of his field-goal attempts last season, including a 38-yarder against USC; defensive back Vito Clemente, who recovered a fumble against Kansas in the Aloha Bowl; Danny Farmer, a freshman wide receiver from Loyola High; Rodney Lee, a junior flanker from Alta Loma High; and sophomore defensive end Damon Smith, who transferred from Ashland (Ohio) University and might start this season.

Funeral services for Dr. Todd Grant, 56, who worked with the UCLA medical staff from 1973-90, will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Brentwood Presbyterian Church. Grant died Thursday during heart bypass surgery.
