Bite of Tyrannosaurus Rex Lives Up to Its Feared Reputation

The bite of the fearsome Tyrannosaurus rex was indeed as bad as its toothsome smile suggests, researchers at UC Berkeley and Stanford University say in a study published in Nature. By studying the fossilized bite marks left by the ancient predator on the pelvis of a hapless Triceratops, the researchers estimated that its crushing jaws could exert between 1,440 and 3,011 pounds of force, more than the greatest power a modern American alligator can exert.
