Baseball Teams Score Early, Often

More than 100 athletes from the Valley area are competing for Los Angeles in the Maccabi Youth Games in Newark, N.J. The following are highlights from action Wednesday.

BASEBALL

Buzz Buyer of Royal High and Brian Horowitz of Crespi each had three hits in a 16-1 victory over Chicago in a boys’ 13-14 age-group game. Peter Tuber of Granada Hills was the winning pitcher.

In a boys’ 15-16 contest, Los Angeles scored 13 runs in the first inning in an 18-0 victory over Philadelphia.

BASKETBALL

Randy Gastwirt of Oak Park scored 16 points, Amir Bar-Nitzer of Taft added 15 points and 13 rebounds and Jason Miller of Calabasas chipped in 12 points and 10 rebounds in a 111-54 victory over Montreal in a boys’ 15-16 game. Michael Cohen of Montclair Prep and Justin Segal of Harvard-Westlake each scored 13 points.

SOCCER

The girls’ team swept a doubleheader, defeating Metro West, 6-0, and Mid Island (N.Y.), 2-0.

The boys’ team split a doubleheader, losing to Bergen, N.J., 2-1, and bouncing back to down Detroit, 7-0.

Ronnie Zavlodaver of Agoura scored on an assist from Danny Sable of Harvard-Westlake against Bergen.

Among those scoring against Detroit were Zach Schwartz and Jon Barry of Harvard-Westlake, Brian Lando of Calabasas, Aaron Benditson of Oak Park and Jona Frisch of Brentwood.

SWIMMING

Ryan Parmenter of Hart won the 200-meter freestyle in the boys’ 15-16 age group with a time of 2 minutes .97 seconds and was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.79.

TENNIS

Nick Weiss of Calabasas defeated Alex Toledana of Metro West, 8-0, in singles and teamed with Matt Parker of Tarzana to defeat Eric Stern and Justin Allen of Tenafly, N.J., and Mike Fox and Ben Nelson of Monmouth, N.J., in doubles.

VOLLEYBALL

Jon Drexler of Campbell Hall had 12 kills and Brian Stevenson of Thousand Oaks added 11 as the boys’ 15-16 team defeated Ottawa and Chicago and split with East Hills.
