Yoffe Denies Role in Shooting Cover-Up

From Staff Reports

Scott Yoffe, the former Cal State Northridge sports information assistant who school officials said made up a lie about a football player’s injury, said Friday he was “not the one who concocted” the story.

Last week and again earlier this week, Northridge football Coach Dave Baldwin told reporters that running back Shayne Blakey would use his redshirt season this fall while recovering from an appendectomy.

Blakey actually is recovering from a gunshot wound suffered Aug. 9 at a party in West Hills.

Baldwin said the cover-up was designed to protect Blakey’s privacy.

So who made up the story?

Yoffe says he doesn’t know, Athletic Director Paul Bubb says he doesn’t much care, and Baldwin says it wasn’t him, but he’s willing to take responsibility anyway.

“I never tried to come up with who came up with the story,” Bubb said. “My concern was that a story had been concocted and that it was repeated. That created the problem we had.”

Said Baldwin: “I have no clue who came up with it, but I am taking the blame for it.”

The school will be conducting its own investigation into the shooting incident and attempted cover-up.

Yoffe recently took a job with the San Diego Chargers.
